Joseph Wolgamott I was born circa 1716 at Germany; Calculated from the age given for his arrival in America in 1736; he was then 20.1 He was baptized on 15 December 1716 at Deutsch-Reformed-Kirche. He appeared on the census of 1736 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.2,3 He immigrated on 1 September 1736; The following info comes from Roberta Horton of Concord, CA., a direct decendant of Joseph.
Joseph Wohlgemuth - The Immigrant
Joseph Wohlgemuth arrived in Philadelphia on September 1,1736 on the ship "HARLE". He had sailed from Rotterdam and was probably from Switzerland by way of Germany. Joseph was 20 years old when he arrived with his two brothers, also both in their twenties. Abraham lived out his years in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His descendants held to the original spelling of the family name - Wohlgemuth - Wolgemuth. Abraham married Elizabeth Miller, daughter of Michael and Barbara Miller. Samuel Wohlgemuth (later Wolgamott) arrived on the ship "FRANCIS and ELIZABETH'" and married Barbara Miller, Elizabeth's sister. Samuel Wohlgemuth was certainly a close relative, possibly a cousin or younger brother of the three Wohlgemuth brothers who arrived in 1726. Joseph's wife's name was Catherine. We do not know her maiden name. Joseph was naturalized as a British subject on October 20,1747. Joseph settled in Maryland and his first land purchase was in 1745 on Conococheague Creek, north
and west of Hagerstown from Lord Fairfax This was then Prince Georges County. In 1749 and 1763 he added land and by then had 520 acres of land and at least one mill. By this time the area was called Frederick County and still was when his will was made on August 2, 1774, His will was proved (probated) January 12, 1775, He probably died December 1774. That area later became (and still is) Washington County, Maryland. Joseph Wohlgemuth built his "New Mill" on Conococheague creek about 1770 and it is still standing and in use now as "The Old Mill Tavern" His wife, Catherine, and his two sons sold this property to Nicholas Swingle in 1777. Joseph's will devised property to his wife. Catherine, four daughters and two sons, Joseph and David. Joseph's wife, Catherine, died at the home of her son, David, in Martinsburg, West Virginia in 1795 She and David are buried in the cemetery adjoining the St. John's Lutheran church in Martinsburg.
He appeared on the census of 1739 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; Territorial Census.3 He married Catherine (?) circa 1740 at Prince George's County, Maryland. Joseph Wolgamott I owned; At the time of the purchase, it was Prince George County. Then it became Frederick County and in 1776 it became Washington County, Maryland.4 He was naturalized on 20 August 1747; became British subject.4 He owned; He built his "New Mill" which is still in use today as The Old Mill Tavern.4 He died between August 1774 and January 1775 at Frederick County, Maryland.
